Number of blotches, color of blotches posteriorly,width of pale interspaces between anterior blotches, andcolor of lateral intercalary spots vary considerably geographically.In some populations ( lineaticollis and gibsoni) the anterior blotchesare divided medially forming either a pair of dark stripes on the anteriorpart of the body or a series of paired spots. Common name: Pacific gopher snake, coast gopher snake, western gopher snake, more. Pituophis catenifer is a species of nonvenomous colubrid snake endemic to North America.Nine subspecies are currently recognized, including the nominotypical subspecies, Pituophis catenifer catenifer, described here. This snake is often mistaken for the prairie rattlesnake, but can be easily distinguished from a.
